The Challenge

With a growing population of over 100 million people, Egypt is the most populous country in North Africa and the Arab world. Its agricultural, textile production and various industries attract refugees and migrants seeking a better life. At the same time, Egypt suffers from high unemployment rates, rendering its most vulnerable communities --including refugees and migrants-- without access to education, healthcare and employment.

The Organisation

Through Nakoll's Online Cooking School, refugees and migrants from Syria, Yemen, Palestine and Iraq are provided with the equipment, ingredients and training they need to advance their culinary skills and secure employment in the food and beverage industry.

Nakoll developed their Online Cooking School in 2020, initially as an in-person course at a culinary school based in Cairo; however, the course was modified and moved online to align with COVID-19 restrictions. To date, Nakoll has trained over 100 chefs, with the majority being refugees from Syria, Ethiopia, Yemen, Iraq, Palestine and Sudan.

Alfanar's Support: Looking Ahead

Through Alfanar's support, Nakoll will continue to expand its Online Cooking School, providing culinary training and employment opportunities to migrants, refugees and women from the local community across Egypt. Alfanar will also support the establishment of an adequate monitoring and evaluation system, enabling Nakoll to measure and grow their social impact.

Nakoll is part of our SEMD Project, a regional project initiated and funded by the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) and implemented by GFA Consulting Group and Endeva.
