Together for Umi

Umi supports mothers in Jordan’s underserved communities—particularly refugees and those confined to their homes due to cultural or circumstantial barriers—by providing home-based work crafting eco-friendly, handcrafted products. This approach addresses unemployment worsened by the Syrian refugee crisis and declining international aid, helping shift mindsets from aid dependency towards financial independence. By generating sustainable income, Umi enables women to break generational cycles of reliance on donations and inspires young people to pursue productive futures. A portion of sales is directed towards urgent community needs, including in Gaza and Sudan, creating a ripple effect of empowerment, environmental stewardship, and long-term impact.

Achievements

Together for Umi moved into Alfanar's SUSTAIN portfolio in 2026 after completing our SEED cycle. This next stage will focus on scaling the model and expanding its impact, reflected by a growing number of mothers engaged in income-generating activities, and a substantial increase in the income generated for women. Umi will also be focused on continuing skills training and community support initiatives, including meal distribution, to support mothers as well as the wider community.
