The Challenge

Egypt’s elderly population is on the rise, and by 2050 is predicted to make up 22% of the overall population of the country. Due to historical lack of demand and limited availability of funds, the elderly population of Egypt currently have very limited access to social care, especially outside of urban centres. At the same time, young people – particularly women – are desperate for the chance to earn a steady income.

The Organisation

Together for You aims to provide affordable professional care for the elderly, and a new source of dignified employment for women. Set up by grassroots leader Mariam Gaballa, Together For You’s 40-day training course equips women with the range of skills needed to become professional caregivers. Women who successfully complete the training are then placed in homes, with Together For You following up and monitoring their performance. With its committed management team and a solid business model that includes charging fees for its services, we are convinced that Together For You has strong potential for growth and replication across Egypt and beyond.

Ever since I joined Together for You, I have been on a journey of growth… I have gained a sense of maturity I would not have in another industry. I try to encourage other women to find their strength and believe in themselves too.

What has been Achieved with Alfanar's Support

Alfanar's investment has enabled Together For You to greatly increase the number of women it trains and employs. This has been achieved through the opening of a second location in East Cairo, as well as by offering courses of varying lengths, including 21-day courses and 10-day courses alongside their 40-day training programme. Additionally, our management support has helped TFY to strengthen its core team and board structure, to improve its financial management and monitoring and reporting systems and to increase financial sustainability through income growth, allowing TFY to successfully manage the impact of the IMF-backed austerity measures. TFY is particularly notable for their almost total automation of their impact measurement, freeing up staff time to be more productively used elsewhere.

Alfanar's Investment: Looking Ahead

Alfanar’s investment will continue to focus on the expansion of the TFY programmes, especially with relation to the second location in East Cairo. This will help increase the size of the TFY cohort, and ultimately improve financial sustainability of the TFY programme.
